16. The Great Buddha of Kamakura (Kamakura Daibutsu)
| The statue was neglected and suffered much damage over the centuries. It is said that, for a time, gamblers lived inside it (visitors today can climb inside the statue). In the 18th century a restoration process was begun but the statue was damaged again by an earthquake in 1923. It has since been further strengthened to withstand such events in future. |
