Garibaldi, an Italian general and politician, and one of the recognised "fathers of Italy", took an active part in the ill fated attempt to establish the Roman Republic in 1842. He left Rome and was welcomed in Todi, where his statue now stands. The unification of Italy ("risorgimento") was finally achieved in 1870.
