2. The Colosseum

One of the best known symbols of Rome, the Colosseum was built in 72 AD and accommodated up to 50,000 spectators for contests between gladiators as well as fighting involving slaves, prisoners and wild animals. At times the arena was flooded and maritime battles enacted here. It was certainly the centre of Roman "entertainment" at the time.
