Tonie Sap Lake is close to Siem Reap and the Temples of Angkor. It is connected to the Mekong River and accepts its "overflow" in the wet season, rising to 9 metres above its dry season level with its surface area increasing form 2,500 km˛ to 13,000km˛. The Cambodian fishing industry is centred on the lake and is still mainly comprised of small enterprises and family groups, although larger businesses are now setting fish traps at the end of kilometres of "guiding" nets, plundering stocks and inevitably creating problems for the future. Because of the massive seasonal changes in water level and surface area of the lake, the people involved in the fishing industry live in "pole houses" built in the lake on poles above the "high water mark", or in "floating villages" at the edge of the lake. |
