These photos were taken during our cruise of the Galapagos Islands in September 2005. The islands are reached by air from Quito, the capital of Ecuador. On arrival, we transferred to a small "motor yacht", MV Fragata. The islands are volcanic and are moving slowly eastwards as the tectonic plates of the earth move. New volcanic eruptions are gradually creating new islands in the "hot spot" to the west of the islands, as the easternmost islands are being gradually eroded. The wildlife of the islands includes many species which have evolved differently on different islands. So, for example, we have red footed boobies, blue footed boobies and masked boobies. Also, land and marine iguanas have evolved differently on different islands. |
