This is an album of photos taken during our few days in Beijing in the first week of May 2002. On arrival, we discovered that the first week of May is a whole week of public holidays, during which it seemed that the entire population of China visited Beijing. The highlight of the trip was, without doubt, a day spent at the Forbidden City. We had looked forward to visiting the Great Wall, but our first trip to the Wall was to the Badaling section, just north of Beijing, and was something of a disappointment due to the amount of rebuilding that has been done (for example, the wall now contains a huge archway over a multilane highway). Because of this we took a second trip to the Great Wall, this time to the Mutianyu section, further from Beijing. This was a much better experience, with a long and interesting section of the wall to explore. Some of these photos were scanned from film taken with one of our old Nikon F cameras. Others were taken with a Kodak DC290 - an early digital camera. At 2 megapixels, it was one of the better digital cameras available at the time but, unfortunately, the quality of reproduction suffers when compared with today's cameras. |
