A public operatic performance in Tongli, China
| While in Shanghai we visited Tongli, a "water town" west of the city, for a couple of days. In the strong tradition of public entertainment in Chinese towns and villages, there was an operatic performance of "The Pearl Pagoda" in progress in the town square when we arrived. The opera is presented in traditional (Xiju) opera style and is the romantic story of a young local couple. |
