Interior of the Blue Mosque, Istanbul

The Blue Mosque is open to visitors outside prayer hours. We arrived early in the morning and were the first people admitted. Being inside the vast, but empty, prayer area was quite an experience. Comparison with the Hagia Sophia, less than a kilometre away, was inevitable. Kamal Ataturk made the right decision in 1935. The Hagia Sophia is, quite rightly, a museum; this is a place of worship.
